FOLEY’s Catheter
A Foley’s catheter is a flexible tube used to drain urine from the urinary bladder. It is an indwelling catheter, meaning it can remain inside the bladder for a longer period. It is inserted through the urethra and held in place by a small inflatable balloon near its tip.
Description
A Foley’s catheter is usually made of latex or silicone. It has a rounded tip, drainage eye holes, and a balloon near the tip that is filled with sterile water to keep the catheter inside the bladder. The outer end connects to a urine collection bag.
Foley’s catheters are commonly used for long-term urine drainage, after surgery, and for patients who cannot urinate normally. They are available in different sizes measured in French (Fr) units.
